De biodiversiteit – de verscheidenheid aan soorten – neemt af en dat is vreselijk. Biodiversiteit is beter dan biosaaiheid. Ik moet er niet aan denken in een wereld te moeten leven met maar één plant- of diersoort.

Maar wat is eigenlijk een soort hè? Als twee organismen gezamenlijk geen vruchtbare nakomelingen kunnen krijgen, dan is er sprake van twee verschillende soorten. Dat is de meest gangbare betekenis van het begrip “soort”. Dus wanneer we zo veel mogelijk verschillende soorten willen, dan willen we zo veel mogelijk organismen – planten en dieren – die gezamenlijk geen vruchtbare nakomelingen kunnen krijgen. Dat is toch iets vreemds om te willen eigenlijk…

In Nederland leven zo’n zestig verschillende soorten lieveheersbeestjes: oranje met zwarte stippen; zwart met oranje stippen; geel met stippen; bruin zonder stippen. Van de meest herkenbare – de oranje versie met zwarte stippen – bestaan onder andere de volgende, verschillende soorten: het tweestippelig lieveheersbeestje, het vijfstippelig lieveheersbeestje, het zevenstippelig lieveheersbeestje, het tienstippelig lieveheersbeestje, het elfstippelig lieveheersbeestje en het dertienstippelig lieveheersbeestje. Allemaal verschillende soorten omdat die lieveheersbeestjes gezamenlijk geen vruchtbare nakomelingen krijgen of kunnen krijgen. Maar onderling variëren ze maar weinig.

Er is ook een ander lieveheersbeestje met precies het tegenovergestelde: het veelkleurig Aziatisch lieveheersbeestje. Het is hier niet zo lang geleden uit Azië geïntroduceerd om luizen te bestrijden in de tuinbouw en leeft nu op verschillende plekken in Nederland in het wild. Het is maar één soort maar het heeft heel veel verschillende verschijningsvormen: je hebt ze in het oranje met zwarte stippen, en in het zwart met oranje stippen, met vijf stippen, zeven, elf, dertien, zeventien stippen. Het houdt niet op. Eén soort en toch veel variatie. Wat heeft u liever: zes verschillende typen lieveheersbeestjes die onderling nauwelijks te onderscheiden zijn maar die geen vruchtbaar nageslacht van elkaar kunnen krijgen; of lieveheersbeestjes die er allemaal heel verschillend uitzien en die onderling wél nageslacht kunnen krijgen? Ik moet zeggen dat ik het zeker niet vanzelfsprekend vind om voor het eerste te kiezen: de optie met de grootste verscheidenheid aan soorten, de grootste biodiversiteit.

Een verscheidenheid aan leven is mooi. Maar die verscheidenheid hoeft ‘m wat mij betreft niet per se in verschillende soorten te zitten. Soms vind ik minder soorten, biosaaiheid, mooi genoeg.

It is my aim to give science and philosophy a meaning in everyday life, and for every day people. I am “special” professor at Leiden University studying the public understanding of science.

“One, two, three. Well well wel, another lesson by Grover. Isn’t he smart?!”

Grover counts. Grover counts in two ways. He counts: one, two, three. And he counts as one of the key figures in Sesamestreet. An intruiging double meaning of the word “count”. “One, two, three.” That’s counting. And to matter, to be of significance. That also counts. I count, you count, we all count.

Too often – I think – these two meanings of “to count” are mixed up. We then think that the only things that count, are the things we can count. But there is so much more that counts.

In the field of healthcare we count. We count health: 350 hospital beds; 3 days in a bed; on average 23 minutes of attention a day; 1400 operations; 95 percent success; 5 percent losses; 12 ml. of morphine. It’s so easy to think that health equals hospital beds, minutes of attention per day en successrates. Because those we can measure, grasp, count. But can health be counted? And should we do that?

How good is this paper? 250 thousand readers and on average 72 articles of about 400 words. More than 50 percent of Dutch executives reads this paper in the weekend. (Executives are owners of firms with a turn over of at least a million euros, or with more than 20 employees; or are people in the public sector in a salary scale of at least 16.) Okay, but how good is this paper? Can we count quality?

And how beautiful is the Nachtwacht? Well, it’s so beautiful that it attracts more that 800 thousand visitors a year; who pay about 12 euros; and stay in Amsterdam, on average, for about two-and-a-half days; and spend 300 euros per person. That’s how beautiful the Nachtwacht is.

I do understand why we count so much. We cannot put our fingers on things we cannot count. That’s fine. But we take counting so seriously that we that we think that only the countable things do count.

There is so much we cannot count. How much, I don’t know. But much of it counts.

And what is success, anyway? Is success measured by money, by status, by children? Perhaps we should be thinking about success in a different way. Perhaps the real successful people are those who simply enjoy life. Who don’t do anything at all!

“For a successful life” (Beautiful books, 2008) subtly undermines the competitive culture of ambition and drive – and lets you look at your life in a completely new way.

According to the Dutch national journal for biology teachers it is “the most brilliant text about evolution in the Dutch language”. The book won the Golden Owl for children’s literature (the most prestigious price for Dutch children’s literature); is published in more than ten countries; and sold over 60.000 copies in the Netherlands.

Although an English translation is available, it is not published in the UK nor the US. To my regret. I consider to make it available online for free this year. Because of Darwin year.

We maken ons zorgen over de toekomst. Over het milieu. Het voortbestaan van soorten. Zullen er over honderd jaar nog tijgers zijn? Of het regenwoud? Is Nederland tegen die tijd misschien onder water gelopen? Het lijkt vanzelfsprekend dat we ons die zorgen maken: die arme mensen in de toekomst. In de rotzooi dankzij ons. Maar onze zorg is ook wel raadselachtig: wijzelf zullen er over honderd jaar immers niet meer zijn.

Dit essay is een zoektocht naar de mogelijke antwoorden op twee vragen. Eén: waarom maken we ons druk over de toekomst – de verre toekomst van na onze dood? En twee: hoe erg is een toekomst zonder natuur? De antwoorden op deze vragen lijken vanzelfsprekend. Maar dat zijn ze niet.

Het aquarium van Walter Huijsmans (Lemniscaat, 2009) is 1 april verschenen in het kader van de maand van de filosofie.

De ijzeren wil (Uitgeverij Houtekiet, 2003) is een boek over de verschillen tussen mensen, konijnen en computers. Het gaat over kunstmatige intelligentie en over de filosofische vragen die daaraan gerelateerd zijn. Vragen als:

• Begrijpen tekstverwerkers de teksten die ze verwerken?
• Kan een verzameling domme mieren in z’n totaliteit intelligent zijn?
• Wat is bewustzijn, en zit ‘t ergens?
• Kan een robot bang zijn om te sterven?

Het boek won in 2002 de Gouden Uil voor jeugdliteratuur, de Eureka! prijs voor populair wetenschappelijke literatuur.
